Cozy, comfortable, neat, and tidy are all words you want to think of when you look at your bed. If you instead have words like messy, chaotic, and ugly, then today’s article will help to change that for you. This project will give you easy-to-do steps that will help you declutter your bed and all the areas around it.
Why Declutter Your Bed Area?
Clutter is loud, and sleeping in a noisy and chaotic space is a less-than-perfect way to get rest after a long, hard day. A cluttered bed can lead to a cluttered mind, making it difficult to relax and unwind. It can also disrupt your sleeping patterns and cause you to wake up feeling tired and sluggish even before your feet hit the ground.
By decluttering your bed, you create a calm, peaceful environment promoting better sleep and overall well-being.
Step-by-Step Guide to Decluttering Your Bed
Work on one step at a time, making progress as you go. This list is meant to be easy so you can finally set up a room you deserve and enjoy sleeping in.
Start with the Bed Itself
The first step to decluttering your bed area is to tackle the bed. Remove each item from the bed, sorting as you go. Use these categories for sorting to make this step easier.
- Keep – Anything that will stay on your bed.
- Put Away – Anything that belongs in another area.
- Donate – Anything you no longer need or want.
Consider keeping only the bare minimum on your bed, making it easier to make each morning. Instead of 10 throw pillows, cut that down to 3. It will still look nice but won’t take you as long to make each morning.
Once everything is removed, take the time to clean your bed. Let’s break it down.
- Clean the mattress. Dust with baking soda and let it sit to absorb any odors. Vacuum the entire surface, getting the corners and the sides. If you are able, rotate or flip your mattress.
- Using a hand vacuum, clean throw pillows and allow them to sit outside in the sun. This is a natural way to disinfect, and it will freshen up your pillows.
- Put on fresh sheets and make the bed.
If it’s been ages since you invested in new sheets, maybe now is a good time to splurge on yourself. You might be surprised how new sheets and a pretty comforter can completely change the look of your entire room.

- Remove any items from the top of your headboard, sorting as you go using the same categories as before.
- Dust and wipe down the surface of the headboard. Be sure to get the back as well.
- Use containers to keep this area more organized. A tray to hold hand lotion and tissues, a basket to hold misc items, or a bag to hold reading material.
