Decluttering Tips For Your Bed

Cozy, comfortable, neat, and tidy are all words you want to think of when you look at your bed. If you instead have words like messy, chaotic, and ugly, then today’s article will help to change that for you. This project will give you easy-to-do steps that will help you declutter your bed and all the areas around it.

Why Declutter Your Bed Area?

Clutter is loud, and sleeping in a noisy and chaotic space is a less-than-perfect way to get rest after a long, hard day. A cluttered bed can lead to a cluttered mind, making it difficult to relax and unwind. It can also disrupt your sleeping patterns and cause you to wake up feeling tired and sluggish even before your feet hit the ground.

By decluttering your bed, you create a calm, peaceful environment promoting better sleep and overall well-being.

Step-by-Step Guide to Decluttering Your Bed

Work on one step at a time, making progress as you go. This list is meant to be easy so you can finally set up a room you deserve and enjoy sleeping in.

Start with the Bed Itself

The first step to decluttering your bed area is to tackle the bed. Remove each item from the bed, sorting as you go. Use these categories for sorting to make this step easier.

  1. Keep – Anything that will stay on your bed.
  2. Put Away – Anything that belongs in another area.
  3. Donate – Anything you no longer need or want.

Consider keeping only the bare minimum on your bed, making it easier to make each morning. Instead of 10 throw pillows, cut that down to 3. It will still look nice but won’t take you as long to make each morning.

Once everything is removed, take the time to clean your bed. Let’s break it down.

  1. Clean the mattress. Dust with baking soda and let it sit to absorb any odors. Vacuum the entire surface, getting the corners and the sides. If you are able, rotate or flip your mattress.
  2. Using a hand vacuum, clean throw pillows and allow them to sit outside in the sun. This is a natural way to disinfect, and it will freshen up your pillows.
  3. Put on fresh sheets and make the bed.

If it’s been ages since you invested in new sheets, maybe now is a good time to splurge on yourself. You might be surprised how new sheets and a pretty comforter can completely change the look of your entire room.

Declutter and Organize the HeadBoard

Next up is the headboard area. If you have room for storage, work on organizing this area next. This is where things can quickly pile up and create a cluttered look.

  1. Remove any items from the top of your headboard, sorting as you go using the same categories as before.
  2. Dust and wipe down the surface of the headboard. Be sure to get the back as well.
  3. Use containers to keep this area more organized. A tray to hold hand lotion and tissues, a basket to hold misc items, or a bag to hold reading material.

Only keep a few essential items on your headboard, such as a lamp, alarm clock, and maybe a photo frame or two. Having fewer items on your headboard will give your bed a relaxed and inviting look.

Declutter and Organize Under the Bed

Finally, let’s tackle the area under your bed. This is often a forgotten storage space that can quickly become a catch-all for items we don’t know where else to put.

  1. Pull out everything from under your bed and sort through it using the same categories as before.
  2. Donate or discard any items you no longer need or want.
  3. Consider using storage solutions such as under-bed storage containers or vacuum-sealed bags for items you want to keep but don’t need access to every day.
  4. Make sure to clean and vacuum the area under your bed before putting everything back.

What can you store under a bed?

Using the area below your bed is a great way to find more storage space in your room. What you store there is up to you, here are a few ideas:

  1. Extra shoes – Use special containers for storing shoes or boots that are out of season.
  2. Seasonal clothes – You can keep winter sweaters or summer beach wear under your bed, freeing up space in your closet.
  3. Blankets or linens – If you do not have a linen closet, then under the bed is a great option to consider. Use storage roller baskets to hold extra sheets, blankets, or pillows.

Now that you have your bed area decluttered, cleaned, and organized, let’s set up a plan to keep things neat and prevent the clutter from coming back.

Set up a Room Reset Routine

Having a routine that you do each morning to reset this space will ensure you are always greeted with a pleasant room each evening.

What is a room reset?

A room reset is tidying up a room and putting things away at the same time each day. It can be as simple as making the bed, putting clothes away, and quickly dealing with any clutter.

How to create a room reset routine:

  1. Decide on a set time each day to do your room reset. For the bedroom, a reset is best done in the morning.
  2. Start by making the bed.
  3. Next, tidy up the headboard and nightstand area.
  4. Finish by getting any items off the floor.

Just a few quick steps can make a big difference to the overall look of your room.

Decluttering and organizing your bed is one of those projects that is worth the time spent. Your days are busy and hectic, and having a place to escape to each night will not only benefit your health but your overall well-being.

Be selfish with this space, and take time each morning to set it up just how you like it using these decluttering tips for your bed. It will be time well spent, for sure!
