How to organize an important area in your home using containers that work great at streamlining how you store your food.

Best Refrigerator Organizers (1)

After a long and busy day, being faced with a messy and cluttered refrigerator may be the last place you want to be. The fridge is an area that is often disorganized and cluttered, making it hard to keep track of what food you have in stock.

When it comes time for meal planning or just grabbing a quick snack, all that chaos makes it impossible to find things quickly. Spending time organizing your fridge is an effective way to save money on groceries and make mealtime stress-free.

What is the best way to organize your refrigerator?

To set up an organized fridge, put the food you use most where it is easies to reach. You will also want to keep in mind the food itself and how cold it needs to be to stay fresh.

  1. Door – Great for keeping condiments and spreads.
  2. Shelf #1 – Drinks
  3. Shelf #2 – Eggs, yogurt, and other dairy products.
  4. Shelf #3 – Snacks, misc items
  5. Shelf #4 – Leftovers
  6. Drawer #1 – Meats
  7. Drawer #2 – Fruits and vegetables

Use clear storage bins to keep smaller items consolidated, reducing the chance of items getting lost at the back. Labeling shelves and bins can also streamline the process of finding your food quickly. Remember to implement a first-in, first-out rule—place newer items at the back to ensure older ones are used first.

Regularly check expiration dates and adjust your layout as needed to keep your refrigerator neat and easier to keep that way.

Organizers for Eggs

Whether you purchase eggs or raise your own chickens, having a container to hold them safely is important. Sure, eggs purchased at a store come in a container already, but it is flimsy and hard to tell at a glance how many eggs you have left.

Clip on Egg Organizing Drawers – These work great for holding eggs without taking up valuable space.

Secured Fitted Lidded Containers – A good option if you want to keep your eggs protected from cracking. However, the lids do lock on, meaning you will need to remove the container to get to the eggs. This might not be something your family will be on board with.

Egg Dispenser – I love this option, although I have never used it myself. It is a great way to keep eggs front and center and to do the first in, first out rule more easily.

Egg Container With Loose Fitting Lid – This is what we use, but the lid is annoying. I am not a fan of extra steps, so instead I do not use the lid but just the container. This works great for us!

Organizers for Leftovers

Leftovers may be one of the biggest food wastes in family homes. Be sure you have the right containers to keep things organized in your fridge.

Plastic containers – These options are the most popular because they work great. Be sure to have different sizes so you can store all portions easily.

Glass containers – If you are not a fan of plastic, glass is another option to use. Glass is a bigger cost investment, but they are easy to clean and do not stain.

Leftover Storage Tips

Leftovers are a great way to save money and time, but they can quickly become forgotten in the back of the fridge. Over the years I have learned a few tips that help us to use up our leftovers before they go bad.

Tip #1. Put food into containers and label with the date and type of food inside. If you have young kids, you can also include instructions on a sticky note on how to heat things up.

Tip #2. Designate a shelf in your fridge that is only for leftovers. Make a rule that nothing else can go on that shelf. By having a specific spot, you will be more aware of what you have stored there.

Tip #3. Try to store leftovers in clear containers or stackable bins so that they are easy to find.

Tip #4. Put leftovers in sectioned containers and use them for lunch the next day. Put the person’s name on each container so they can grab their own lunch. Be sure to add heating instructions for anyone that is younger.

Here are a few ideas for leftover storage:

Organizers for Produce

Once I started using containers for produce, I found that things lasted much longer. Not only that, if I wash and cut produce we tend to eat things more quickly.

This one tip alone has dramatically reduced our food waste.

Open containers – Great for holding whole items.

Containers With Lids Collection – These are the containers we use now and they work great for not only produce but for other items as well.

Produce Containers With Locking Lids – I am not a fan of the lids, but these containers are still a good option. They work great to help food last longer and keep things from sitting in juice.

Organizers for Condiments

Most folks keep bottles of condiments in the door, and many times, that is fine. However, there are other options to consider that will work to keep bottles from toppling over. There are also ways to keep packets neater as well.

Lazy Susan – These are some of my favorite organizing tools for not just the fridge but many areas in the home. The ability to turn the platform gives you a 360 view of each item. The high sides help to keep things from falling over.

Flat surface lazy Susan – An inexpensive way to organize condiments but not the best way. The short sides make it more difficult to keep things from falling over when turning.

Segmented lazy Susan – I prefer this option because the divided section does a better job of keeping items from toppling over.

If you are looking to organize packets of condiments, small containers with lids work perfectly. The ones I use are part of a full set and hold the packets perfect.

Another option is mason jars without lids. They fit great in the door and take up little space.

More Refrigerator Options

There are other options to consider when streamlining your fridge, let’s look at a few of our favorites.

Shelf liners – These are great for keeping things clean and giving an anti-slip surface.

Divided Veggie Trays – Make choosing healthy snacks easier with this great tray for veggies and fruits.

Drawers – I just love these organizers because you can turn an ordinary shelf into a section of stacking drawers.

Mesh bags – These are perfect for holding condiment packets, dressing, and more.

Having a streamlined refrigerator is a great investment of your time and an easy project you can tackle in a day. Not only will it keep your food area more organized, but it will also ensure you use the food you purchase more efficiently.

Try any of these best refrigerator organizers to transform where you store your food into a place that is easy to keep neat and streamlined.
